Whistle & Saw: The Mill Towns of the Piney Woods Demo

How sawmills, tram railroads, and company commissaries shaped Pinereach and dozens of fictional sister towns from 1880 to 1940.

Between the 1880s and the Great Depression, longleaf and shortleaf pine drew lumber companies deep into East Texas. Whistle & Saw follows a composite (fictional) mill town from the first survey stake to the last whistle, using tools, payroll scrip, photographs, and recorded oral histories.

Visitors can step into a recreated commissary counter, compare hand and steam saw technology, and trace the tram lines that carried logs to the mill pond on a large floor map.

A final section asks what happened when the timber ran out — and how families stayed, moved, or rebuilt.
